- 4/30 12:54 pm - The production quality on this is excellent! I love the sideline reporter and the evidence of research. I also loved the preparation that ALL three of the announcers exhibited. They were very knowledgeable and gave the viewers some excellent information about the routine and the gymnast. The play-by-play and color commentary was quite clear and showed evidence of research. The announcers pacing was excellent and they did not speak over each other at any time.
Graphic with the gymnast’s stats was great! No other graphics were used.
I really appreciated the variety of shots used in this event. It is obvious that you spent time learning about the sport and filming it enhanced the visual experience. Some of the tight shots were a touch shaky and the dismount was a little tight as we didn’t see the landing which is a very important part of the event.
No replays were used.
- 4/29 10:24 am - Play by play and commentary were very prepared. They knew the routine and were able to give the viewer a heads-up to what was coming up next. There was a good give and take to both guys. They didn’t talk over each other and they maintained a professional approach to the commentary.
For shots, I loved the variety. I was able to see key moments because of the camera angle – from feet to facial expression. It was cut smoothly and in a way I could understand. There were a couple of shots that I could tell had some sort of wireless transmission interference, with noise artifacting happening. I would have liked to have seen a better “full beam†shot, that showed everything more level. And then the dismount distracted me, because I feel like it’s all about the feet, and I didn’t get a chance to see the landing.
No replays to comment on
Really creative single graphic, talking about the player with a coordinated state. I would have liked another graphic, showing the name of the person and maybe the name of the event or school. You have more graphic options than just the one.
Good mix of audio, with very clear and level commentary. The background audio was appropriate.
- 2/25 8:57 am - Profile graphics work great. No shortage of time during typical gymnastics telecast to use them.
Framing of floor reporter shows lots of empty wall. Reporter should turn right shoulder slightly toward camera to encourage viewer focus on athlete over her left shoulder. No chyron for reporter? Reporter needs to freeze at end of insert until director tells her she is clear.
Pre-production research is great.
1:08 - cameras crossed the 180-degree line. Plus, these two cameras are framed the same - medium shots ending at waist. Switching should always be to a differently-framed shot - wide to tight, or wide to medium, or tight to wide, or medium to wide, etc.
1:37 - this camera is shaky.
1:43 - shot began looking odd but then action came to the camera and the shot finished great.
2:10 - director and/or camera op need to commit to framing that doesn't cut-off heads - whether it's wide, medium or tight.
2:40 - this shot really doesn't show us much.
We've got to see the entire body during dismount - which is arguably the most important portion of the entire performance.
Would have enjoyed a crowd reax shot.

Positives: *Nice competitor graphics. Pretty clear that the announcers know their stuff, too. Good use of vocabulary.
*A sideline reporter. Nice. Good reporting--talked to both the players and coaches. Strong.
Improvements: *I think the director could have made the whole show more compelling by cutting less. I loved the camera which showed the competitor's full routine and the beam at the same time. The close-ups took away from the celebration of the athleticism.
*I'd encourage the reporter to use the best stuff and then finish the report. She seemed to be searching for an ending. It was a great report in the first 20 seconds.

Positives: Love the color commentary off the top from everyone - which is really important for a slower paced competition like this.
Clear knowledge of the gymnastics vocabulary.
Improvements: Some camera shots could have been set differently - mainly wanted wider angles to see everything going on - maybe utilize picture-in-picture for close ups?
Reporter shot was very visually stagnant - could move around a bit or just be a little less stiff. The report was great but visuals didn't match that.

Positives: Really nice athlete profile animated graphic! I also really liked having a side line color analyst, it is a really good way to highlight the gymnasts and keep the lag time interesting. The talent sounded very knowledgeable and professional. I really liked the balance of talent mics and crowd mics such as the team members cheering her on.
Improvements: As much as I really like the announcers filling information about the gymnast to help tell a story, the lag time of watching the gymnast stand for about 1:30 into the clip until she can begin can be filled with possibly B-roll of previous gymnastic events she's done or maybe more full page graphics, or other camera angle's of the gymnasium, other gymnastic events happening, etc. The directing of the gymnast on the bean was way too tight. I would keep it more simple and stay mostly wide. Cut only briefly to the close-ups such as her face and feet but get back on the wide-shot because we don't want to miss anything, what is important is to see the landings, level change, etc. and it's actually important to see this in a full body wide-shot, including the landing off the beam and not cropping off the full body of the gymnast.
