  • 4/30 12:56 pm - The camera shots were well thought out in this production. There appeared to be a single camera with a high angle full shot that covered much of the action. The addition of a sideline camera was very helpful and added a lot of interest to this broadcast. Several of the sidelines shots were taken before the camera operator was set. The horizon was very slanted at the start of the shot and then stabilized while the shot was live. While it was helpful to have replay it would be helpful to have a transition that indicates that we are watching a replay. Play-by-play and color announcing was excellent. The voices were clear and strong with some very nice natural sounding energy. Be careful of overdoing your enthusiasm, especially when it is for your school’s team. I appreciated the detail that the announcers tried to provide as they used names regularly and made an effort to add details about the play and scoring. Graphics were helpful although simple. The running clock was useful and and the score was updated regularly. Nice use of school colors in the graphics.
  • 4/29 10:25 am - The play by play and commentary had flair and excitement. I liked how the guys were both into the game and were ready to speak into the play. The play by play did a great job with names. He was very intentional and made sure to say each name throughout the play. Occasionally the audio would peak as they got super excited. I appreciated the value added into the commentary, as it sounded like the boys knew the game of basketball. With camera angles, it looked like we had three angles: one up top, and two on the baselines. It might be nice to add one more next to the wide shot, allowing for tighter shots, but not always having to be floor level for it. The baseline cameras did a decent job. Sometimes they weren’t level, and on one replay, the camera person didn’t look ready to follow the play. The wide shot also needs to always stay with the play, and with one turnover, missed the play entirely With replay, it always seemed to have a baseline replay, instead of using the wide shot. Try to vary that up. And if possible, add some sort of transition effect to show that we are going into replay, instead of just showing another cut. BUT I did like the pace at which the editor handled the game, replay choosing, etc. For graphics, the scoreboard was the only element brought into the game. And that scoreboard is a bit strange. We shouldn’t have fouls or TOs showing if we aren’t going to use the stat. And in general, the left rectangle that extends out of the slanted scoreboard is a strange look. BUT I am happy I was able to see the score and the time. No pre-packaged graphics or interviews.
  • 3/4 6:42 pm - 0:27 - Need medium/tight shot of shooter who was fouled or defender who fouled him. Apparently no pre-produced graphics to take us in and out of replays; dissolve doesn't work in live sports; use wipes instead since dissolves slow the mood & pace of coverage. 0:43 - ref's back quickly gave way to nice medium shot of shooter. 0:46 - lots of unnecessary space to the right of basket/players. 0:57 - stay with tight shooter shot until just before release. 1:07 - either lose the score graphic or widen the shot on this wide up-camera because the graphic is covering players' bodies - even the ball at this point. 1:12 - the ball must always be in the shot during live action. 1:19 - floor camera op. must keep horizon level - using bleachers & other "landmarks" as reference. 1:41 - need hero shot. 1:56 - more horizon issues; took the replay too early but eventually it paid-off. 2:51 - floor camera op. having challenges with staying steady while zoomed-in; once the guard crosses the timeline with the ball, floor camera shot should zoom-out all the way. P-B-P & color were knowledgeable & confident.

Positives: *Great job by the announcers to tell us the story of the game and who the key players were. Credit to the play-by-play announcer for not just following every pass--he captured the big plays and themes well. *Good call by the producer on the replay at the end of the sequence. It was a play worth showing again and fit well.

Improvements: *The camera work could have been better. We missed the out of bounds play early in the segment. Also, the camera under the basket wasn't level. *I think the sound got overmodulated once or twice.

Positives: Great back and forth between commentators. Loved the different levels of energy in their voices, really conveyed what was going on in the game which is especially important when you don't have a roaring crowd to convey that.

Improvements: Camera work could have been a little quicker, lagged at some spots. More color commentary.

Positives: The announcing was talented and well mixed, a little clipping but not too bad. The camera switching wasn't too much which is always nice staying on the game (wide-shot) cam with minimum movement, just following the ball and then going to the handhelds for side-outs, free throws and replays.

Improvements: The game (wide-shot) camera did a nice job of not being too jerky with the movements, although there was an instance where it missed the ball traveling down court. I also noticed the handheld cams were a little shaky and at one point going into replay canted. To help with this, the cam ops could be seated on a rolling chair to help with standing fatigue or even a tripod with wheels. Replay's looked good, however I suggest adding some sort of a graphical transition wipe or a graphic text that can be added to help the viewer distinguish when we are viewing a replay and coming out back to game play other than a cross dissolved. The sound of the announcers where really clear, however they dominated the sound mix, having one or even two mics just facing the court will help balance out talent and game nats (natural sounds of the squeaks of sneakers, and ball hitting the floor, etc) The score strip graphic in the lower third looks good, however there was no information in the "Fouls:" and TO's:" box, If at all possible I would suggest to hide that information and only bring it in when you have an update to show, or keep it filled in with information if need be but not blank. Overall this was very enjoyable to watch!
