"Lovely" is a moving visual-representational of facing and tolerating ones own emotional struggles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1Pl8CzNzCw
Positives: I thought the images worked well with the music and were well thought out. The lighting was effective, expressive and conveyed the right mood for the song.
Improvements: I would have liked to hear some more sound effects in the mix, often sound effects help to establish a sense of place or set a tone.
Positives: The vision of this video was clear from start to finish. It's beautiful. As soon as I was done the first time I immediately watched it again with the sound off and at 2x speed just to see how all your shots flowed together and it was seamless. Your composition was interesting and unique in so many ways with different shots but when you watch them all quickly, you see a unifying compositional theme. Which... is pretty awesome. I'm totally impressed. The layering is a perfect example... you get these awesome coincidences of faces in faces and mirror images and rad stuff because every shot is rad in it's own way. You have a style. go with it. Not sure how you did... it but the lip sync actually worked. I'm going to judge 10 other videos where people tried to lip sync and it ends detracting from the overall value because who can sing as well as these artists? And that fact is obvious, and distracting and it makes me score low. but here... somehow... if I didn't recognize the song and you told me it was these people on screen, I'd have said, "cool."
Improvements: So, the reason I wanted to watch on 2x speed so bad was because of the pacing. And I KNOW.... I know the pacing matches the song perfectly and you were going for something and you got it... but it was a little slow for me at times. The last quarter of the video flowed extremely well. You are getting really good at the fundamentals. I hope you make a bunch more of these! But push yourself. This was an awesome project but I can see editing flare that would really blossom on some more upbeat songs. I build sets. That's my job in LA. And that's usually the first thing I do with these videos is look at the environment the characters are in. I can tell that this means a lot to you because of the locations you chose. This isn't a critique so much as a shout out for making that important. The set is the show. And sometimes the most simplistic ones are the best. Out of all those shots, the shadow/chain shot was the most haunting. Great job overall.
Positives: I really appreciated that this video tried to go non-narrative and abstract. To that end, your performances were wonderfully moody and committed. And the little dance choreography you had was fantastic. The lighting was terrific. You had me at "smoke machine."
Improvements: The challenge with a non-narrative piece is incorporating some kind of structure, build, and even climax. The song does you no favors as it stays pretty flat. But your video ends up pretty repetitive, with very little build, and no real climax. To this point, given your limited number of shots to work with, more could have been done with the editing to vary shot length, rhythm, and pace.
