Registering To Vote - ID# 81

Oak Forest
News Package

Entry Description

This news package was created back in October with the purpose of informing seniors in high school who were eligible to vote how to register. Since young people typically have the lowest turnout rates in the election, this entry utilized a bit of persuasion in the beginning in order to convince young people that voting is not only necessary, but that their voice will actually be heard as well. This entry was created during remote learning, so school equipment was not available. The only equipment used to record and edit was an iPhone XR, a personally owned lav mic, and WeVideo, a free online editing software.

Positives: I love your conversational writing. You made sure to relate to the audience. You were also very confident in your track and that helps keep the viewer engaged. It was great to see the ballot box where people can actually drop off their ballots. Also great showing the website, so voters know what to expect.

Improvements: I like how you were conversational to start, but it felt like you do need to say where you're getting the data. If someone didn't read the small print on the graphic, they wouldn't know where you got your voting numbers. Don't put information on a graphic that you don't reference. You had a note about voter eligibility for people in prison. This did get a bit long at the end with the woman describing every step for registration. After you showed the website, you could say follow the directions to register. The piece was really moving until that point,

Positives: - I think your goal of writing an informative piece was achieved. You have great information for first-time voters, made it easy to understand and I liked how you used graphics to help tell the story. - Nice work on your stand ups in making them active vs. just standing there

Improvements: - While your interview provided great information, to let her sound carry on for so long slows down the pace of your story. I always try to include sound bites that I couldn’t say better myself. In a fact-driven story, find ways to take little bits and pieces of what she says and weave your reporter track around it. The result will be much better flow. - I think you needed more voting video. You could have done an interesting standup as if you were submitting your ballot. The more creative you can get visually, the better your piece will be.

Positives: -great use of graphics to highlight facts -Interview well framed -very informative piece!

Improvements: -to add some personal perspective, it would’ve been great to hear from 18 year olds who are eligible to vote and why they feel it’s important to do so. That could help young viewers relate. -
