  • 4/30 12:54 pm - This is a two camera shoot with an excellent use of replay as well. The graphics are simple which is a banner across the bottom of the screen with a nice use of school colors for each team. The score is updated regularly. There is a little running clock next to the graphics that is very nice to have the time available. The announcers have very mature vocal quality and do a good job of creating energy in their voices. The play-by-play announcer added some specifics about what was happening where during his call. I would like a little more depth to the details of what is happening when it comes to scoring. It is helpful to not only say who scored the basket but who assisted. It is a more complete picture of what is happening on the court. On occasion, when there was something exciting for the home team, the announcers peaked their audio and spoke over each other. Replay was used twice but never referenced by the announcers. There was a replay transition that was used to introduce the replay. It think it is really helpful to use a transition and I was happy to see that you had one. It was distracting to see the video that was part of the effect. It also looked like football which did not seem to complement this broadcast.
  • 4/29 10:23 am - Play by play and commentary had a professional feel. They two sounded mature and intentional with their words. Sometimes the audio would peak ever so slightly when the guys got excited. I like the back and forth with these two guys. A suggestion from a content standpoint would be to make sure you do play by play for the other team with the same focus and intensity as you give the home team. Calling out names more often would help. Not over-commenting on Waubonsie’s play, and rather give a bit more of a balanced approach. Lastly, the guys seem to be pulling in a stat but not sounding confident. Use stats when they are known “only maybe one or two turnovers to their name thus far.” Replay was great at the end. Where was it for the other plays throughout the time? Was that replay the same angle, only zoomed in, or was that a tight shot camera following the whole time? Basketball has so many replayable moments. Do more. The camera angle showed the game well, with a very steady back and forth. However, on dead balls, or replay potential, I would like to see more angles. A secondary tight shot zoomed in on a player or coach, a floor cam, etc. The scoreboard was basic. I like the two logos. I love how the score changes each time. The clock with a cropped camera is a nice touch as well. Besides the scoreboard, there were no graphics. There was no pre-produced material evident.
  • 2/24 9:07 pm - Good use of hero camera, except it would be better to use a camera he is running toward. Need to see tight shot of player who drew the foul before going to replay. P-B-P and/or color need to talk about the replay during the replay; the replay was a home basket, yet the on-air talent chatted about the visitor "turning up the pace" - NOT what we were seeing at that moment. Does talent have a monitor available? 1:06 - great shot of the backside of home #25; did you want that? Standard free-throw sequence: wide shot from up-camera, take tight (head-to-shoulders) shot of shooter at the line from floor camera, take up-camera as soon as ball's released. (Looks like there's no floor camera.) Good hero camera after slam. Have wide/up-camera go even wider so that the score graphic isn't obscuring humans; if that shot is wider, the graphic will obscure the bench and/or fans, instead of the players who are the stars of the telecast. Wanted to see a medium huddle shot before the end of the clip, but a slo-mo replay leading to the break worked very well. Talent sounded great.

Positives: *Great job to roll out with the replay of the dunk. *The game camera was well-framed. We didn't miss anything.

Improvements: *I thought the talent did a good job in how much they talked and how energetic they were. But, I would say that the play-by-play announcer talked over the analyst a few times. Generally, leave the replays to the analyst. *The mics got a bit overmodulated on the dunk.

Judge 2

Positives: Loved the graphics/transitions. Great use of limited cameras - followed the game nicely and incorporated ample close ups without feeling choppy.

Improvements: Sound was a little over-modulated at times. Talent had good chemistry but seemed a little unsure off the top - as clip went on you could feel talent was more comfortable.

Judge 3

Positives: I really liked the directing of this staying on the game cam (wide-shot) following the ball and then cutting to the tight cam (mid court zoomed in cam) that highlighted the hero (player who scored the point/or blocked the ball), and cutting to a relay at the appropriate time. Very nice replay animation wipes. I thought the talent announcing the game did a very good job and sounded very knowledgeable and professional. I also really liked the replay rollout to commercial break it's a nice way to send the game to a break rather than a fade-to-black from live. I also found that there was a bit of a balance of talent audio and nat sounds (natural sounds such as squeaks of sneakers, ball hitting the floor, crowd, etc).

Improvements: Not sure if the audio of the nat sounds were being picked up from the talent mics, but a good way to really capture it is to setup a couple mics pointed at either crowd or the court will help enhance the soundscape. You could also add a replay sound effect to also enhance the affect of the animation wipe. Watch the over modulation when the announcers get excited. There was a tiny bit of audio distortion. I would also recommend if it's allowed to have the handheld camera ops underneath or close to underneath the baskets as apposed to the corners. It would really help with getting shots of players faces straight on and not profile, or having other people get into the shot. The score-strip on the bottom third of the screen is really taking up more space than what is needed. I would suggest to tighten it up and keep it compact. Other than the very nit-picky comments, I found this very interesting to watch! Good work!
