Glenbrook North
Dramatic Narrative

Entry Description

This is a dramatic narrative filmed during remote learning. We had to be create to figure out a story that could link together when not being allowed to be together. We took a traditional story line and tried to put a different and real spin on it.

  • 4/28 9:32 am - Works Well - Great concept for a remote learning story. Acting was believable. Good use of camera movement to add anxious energy. Well-paced editing. Needs Work - Opening silence was a bit too long. The sound of the phone ringing or buzzing was missing. The script made sense, but at times was too wordy to be realistic. The story felt incomplete, probably on purpose, but this could have continued over the course of a few calls or even different days to make a more fleshed out dramatic story.
  • 4/27 9:20 pm - Your story is interesting! I really enjoyed watching this film. I like how we don’t know the conflict between the two characters until about the middle of the film. You do a great job with audio especially when the voice sounds like it is coming from a phone. It could still use a little bit of work. J and L cuts can help with this! You do have a lot of different camera angles but I would strongly suggest using a tripod. The shaky feeling in some of your clips can be a little distracting. You also want to pay attention to the rule of thirds! I think your edit has great pacing and you edit well between the two characters talking on the phone. Overall your clips are well lit! Please see my comments below: 0:07 - Use a tripod here! Placing the camera on a tripod gives you more time to think about the shots, and slows you down (in a good way). You get more time to think about the shot that you are filming and you can really think about techniques (rule of thirds, golden rule, how is the lighting affecting the frame, white balance, etc). It also helps your footage look more stable. 0:38 - There is a shift in focus here. Sometimes if the camera is in auto focus this can happen. Make sure you pay attention to that when filming. I would also use a tripod in this shot. 0:44 - Rule of thirds are important when framing a shot. Now you can break the rule, but you need to know what you’re doing and you need to have a reason for it. This shot would be great if the character was framed on the right third of the frame instead of being center. Why? Right now there is no lead room in front of the character and it looks a bit awkward. 0:51 - Great use of audio here to make it sound like a phone call. 3:14 - There is a pop of sound here right on the cut. I would suggest utilizing J and L cuts. This is where you layer your audio track on different tracks. You then extend the beginning and ends of each track so that they blend into each other. Sometimes these J and L cuts may not work depending on when your audio starts and ends.
