Live stream of the Chicagoland Marching Band Festival.
Positives: -The close-up of the soloist was effective, great job of following the action throughout the piece. -Showing a wide shot of the band when they had a creative formation was great.
Improvements: -Pan with purpose -- too much panning can confuse the viewer if they aren't sure what to look at. -I think the opening shot was two seconds, too quick. Hold the shot a bit longer and make sure the shot is steady before the director takes the shot.
Positives: The use of having a wide shot camera to see the entire performance on the field and having a zoomed in camera was nice to capture moments on in the performance that was hard to see. Audio sounded great!
Improvements: The pan movements of the zoomed in camera was a little distracting and shaky. The camera would've been better off zooming in as a static shot of groups of performers or having a slow zoom in or out to stabilize the shot and keep our attention on one thing at a time. This also goes with the directing, some of the cuts seemed to be taken without any motivation.
Positives: - Nice job with the variety of shots and camera live panning during the performance to show a variety of performers & instruments. - Appreciated the timing of directing in getting to a wide shot as the song was finishing up, that's a great time to be sitting there while the band is in transition to the next song.
Improvements: - Consider using some slow dissolve transitions instead of hard cutting cameras; especially when changing cameras during a song, a 10-20 frame dissolve will really help with the flow of the live music. - The xylophones were a little hot relative to the rest of the band.
