  • 3/30 9:40 pm - KEEPERS: Really nice overall production values. The videography is beautiful and you were clearly blessed with great weather for shooting the practices. Great, even, rich and saturated color tones. Sound quality was really great for your interviews and I loved hearing the coaching that was happening off camera. Production sound is difficult but you really did a great job with it. IMPROVEMENTS: I would have liked to have seen you explore a bit more of the kicker's internal conflict. It's mentioned at 2:30ish in the piece. How could you expound on that? How was she feeling? What were her doubts? Perhaps she wasn't comfortable discussing but if you were able to go into this type of questioning, it could have led to a more nuanced piece. One of the issues I have with this piece is that it feels more like an elongated news report than it does a documentary. The broll rarely deviated from the football field and I wanted to see more of the kicker off the field and in different environments, at home, with friends, etc. One note on production: I find it interesting that all of your interview subjects look directly into the camera. This isn't something that's typically done in documentaries. Typically documentary interviews have the subjects look into the eyes of the interviewer, who is sitting off camera to one side or the other. Having your interview subjects look directly into the lens is a little off putting and not something most viewers are used to seeing, if that makes sense. Value music more. Music tells the audience how to feel. The music was very soft in the mix and I think you needed to have it louder in the moments when no one was speaking. Also make the music changes more dynamic. During that moment at 2:30ish, change the cue to something more dramatic and sad...something that evokes feelings of doubt and then change it later to a song that's more triumphant. Having dynamic music changes in a documentary helps push the emotion of the story and creates a more dynamic piece overall.
