  • 3/31 9:35 pm - KEEPERS: Really nice interview sound bytes from a variety of voices to help thoroughly explore the story from differing perspectives. The broll is also quite thorough and paints a nice picture of how students moved through the STEM summer camp. The production sound is strong. This is not easy considering the wind you had outdoors. Shots are properly exposed and have nice even color correction throughout. IMPROVEMENT: This plays more like an extended news report than a documentary. Documentaries usually more specific conflicts. This story really doesn't as it was captured. It feels like an extended report of what happened at the camp. How could this feel more like a documentary? Interview the kids about their specific struggles. What did they lose over the course of the pandemic? What struggles did they face during remote learning? What drew them to this camp? Also, could you lose the voice over and have it be driven entirely by interview sound bytes? This would also give it a more documentary like feel. What about music? Almost all documentaries have music to create emotional feel and mood throughout the piece. Not having that important element made it feel more news like. Finally, when composing your interview shots, learn to follow the rule of thirds, and frame them in medium close up shots (chest to the top of the head). Try to vary the backgrounds up so each person isn't being filmed with the same background. In terms of graphics try to have the lower thirds emerge from the left hand side of the screen and try giving them a bit more color. Overall, there is a lot to like here, but it needs more nuance and overall work to create an effective documentary. Keep working!
