  • 3/11 2:54 pm - Builds well. Acting and production values are solid. Not too much variation in scenes, cinematography in trailer
  • 2/25 2:10 pm - STORY: This wins. Without a doubt, as a movie trailer, it succeeds in making me want to watch this movie. A complete story tease, characters, dialogue, tension, fear of the unknown. Well done! CAMERA: So many great shots, and a huge variety of compositions, angles, and movement. EDITING: Your editing was a shining example of pacing. You began gradually and worked the pace of your edits to create tension and ultimately hook the audience into the scene. LIGHTING: This is excellent! You used lighting to effectively tell your story and create the mood. All of your images, even the ones intended to be dark, are enhanced because you took the time to effectively light your scenes and actors. AUDIO: Good audio mix; you clearly understand how to control your audio levels in both recording and in post-production. Your use of dialogue, sound effects and nat sound, and a scary soundtrack were all on point.

Positives: "Phasmophobia" utilizes pools of light, and effective camera and editing techniques to enhance the chilling atmosphere and jump-scares that make this an impactful trailer. The cuts between natural sound and walkie-talkie sound works well as a bridge between the tension of the house interior and truck interior. Good job!

Improvements: The performances as seen in the trailer could be improved to help sell the terror of the situation.

Positives: Great cinematography, lighting, and building of the tension! Using the flashlight, blacklight, red light, and warping effects offers a ton of creative ways to selectively guide the audience through a tense search through the house. Showing very little of the creature was a great idea--makes it even scarier. The hand around the corner! Jeez!

Improvements: The bright lights in the van reduced tension. It would have been cool to either use some small colored lights or at least a dark color correction to keep the van from being too bright. We don't want the audience to feel too safe. At times, the acting pulls us out when they don't appear as stressed as they should be. On big Hollywood sets, the production moves very slow. Most days we only shoot 15-20 shots. With a lot of downtime, it's easy for the actors to get bored. We don't want that to show on the screen! So directors will often hype up the cast in a way that helps them feel the way they should feel before the camera rolls. One way to make your actors look and feel exhausted would be to make them run a quick sprint before each take. That sweat and panting breath will look great on camera!

Positives: Cool editing tricks and interested right from the start.

Improvements: If the dirty water is the first sign of a demon, give us more visuals without any audio (let the audience think about it). Also, the audio levels are jumping all over with different microphones. Also, the flashing light effect is very distracting.
