  • 4/19 2:20 pm - Good job with audio levels- everything very consistent. Graphics and lower thirds look solid. Very timely news packages included in the video- graphics look professional, as do the interviewees and b-roll footage. Pandemic reporter slurs his words a bit- slow down and annunciate all words. Reporter on Fair/school story does a nice job reporting. Odd that your weatherman was already seen on the show in a package that had nothing to do with weather. Sports was well done- good highlights and voice over to the action with interviews mixed in. Overall, it was a professional looking newscast and done well. However, this video could have or should have been in the DQ list, as it's opening sequence was the exact same one used last year. The rules clearly state that no video from previous years can be used, and that means even in an opening. An opening is important to a show, and using a good one from previous years is not fair or allowed. I'd look to make sure those are changed each year from here on out.

Positives: This is a well-rounded newscast jam-packed with local content. You are bringing attention to issues that directly impact students and staff in their daily lives. The amount of stories is very impressive. Having three reporter packages in a show is a producer's dream! Great use of graphics-- those help the viewer better understand what will change (5G service, school calendar). Kudos to interviewing two people for each story-- including multiple voices, and equally covering two sides of an issue, keeps you credible. I also appreciate that you are able to include weather and sports segments. I would have loved to be involved in a broadcast program this well-developed in school! Great job.

Improvements: I would have liked to hear more from the interviewees in the news packages. Experts are there to break down the issues (5G cell network) or give opinion on a topic (pandemic mental health) in a way we can't as reporters. One of the most difficult parts of anchoring is ad-libbing and looking away from the prompter. With practice, on a two-shot, you'll be able to look at the other anchor when they're speaking and know the first few words of your next line as you look back to the camera. Also cross-talking between anchors, weather and sports talent (when time allows) lets your personality to shine through a bit, and enables the viewer to get to know you better.

Positives: I commend you on producing a professional newscast with hard news stories including 5G and the school calendar changes. It was particularly impressive how the school calendar story explained how students would be impacted, such as the interference with the county fair. The weather graphics were impressive and Mr. Jann showed good green-screen skills. The sports report included not just scores, but interviews. And the anchors did well with appropriate over-the-shoulder graphics for the calendar items. At the end, plugging how to submit stories or follow on Twitter or Snapchat show was a professional touch. Your students have the talent and have been prepared well to enter the news industry. Outstanding production value. Your graphics were high quality and consistent. The graphics with music made for great transitions. The newscast, overall, was slick and tight.

Improvements: Your stories could have used some localization. While the 5G story was a high-quality, national-level story, it lacked the localization that a Chicago or Rockford station would want. Are Crown Point students worried about the 5G concerns or excited about the technology? For the COVID story, teachers were interview but what about the student perspective? What are students’ thoughts on the new calendar? Your news package could’ve benefits from having a narrative. Stories that included on how someone was exited or worried about 5G, had been impact by COVID or would be impacted by the new school schedule would’ve been more engaging.

Positives: I like how you started with a variety of headlines and carried the open music through the headlines I like how Rocco had active live shots. Movement and props help when a reporter has a lot to say. I love how you asked for content and also pushed to past content. This felt like a concise newscast with a variety of stories plus weather and sports

Improvements: Does someone operate the camera on your opening shot? It looks like the camera is broken as it bobs down and appears like the anchors are looking at the wrong camera. Why doesn't Chris intro his own pkg? Also, cut off standup tag and read the tag during the newscast. You shouldn't have a sig out then read the next story. It's very confusing. If you had edit pkgs for time to fit this entry, then your pkgs were probably too long to start.
