4/10 2:21 pm - This entry was disqualified because it went over the maximum time limit for the category. When we see him in the interview, we should not hear the natural audio from the b-roll. We should only be hearing the natural audio when we actually see the b-roll that goes with it. Remember the purpose of this category - to use the natural audio to help tell the story along with the sound bytes. Just having natural audio in the package isn't enough. Bring that audio up full during the story in spots so we can hear it. Put a wireless lav on him and follow him during his music classes to hear the interactions he has with his teachers and his fellow classmates. Show us video of him in the marching band. Mic him up during the marching band and let us hear him - that's the kind of natural audio we're looking for. This type of story takes some planning ahead of time to be able to pull off, as you need to put a wireless mic on folks and don't always know what you're going to get. But if you don't use that natural audio to help tell your story, then you just have a regular news package.

I loved that the interview was shot with different angles, it would have got boring if for all 3 minutes we just saw the same interview shot, good job.
This is a natural sound package, it would have been real easy in-between main ideas/sections of the interview to drop in a quick drum beat to help the audience digest what they heard and understand they are about to go to a new topic. Him being a drummer lends itself well to that, and yet those “natural sounds” were missing. I am aware there was drumming thought-out the interview underneath, but I would argue that was more of a soundtrack than a natural sound.
The B-roll of the big blue sections was good, the other parts seemed more generic and as a result those sections of the video are not really as memorable. For example I know he talks about loving Marching Band – would have loved more reinforcing footage of that.
