Mistakes made and a yearning for redemptive cleansing paints the narrative for this Leon Bridges original.
Positives: Imaginative use of compositing. Storytelling is clear and moving.
Improvements: The backdrop on the guitar player could be more appealing, The throwing of the cap at the end is too much. In a video that exercises restraint, this gesture comes off as melodramatic.
Positives: The performance by the singer was so effective and beautifully done I had to check who Leon Bridges is. I thought the compositing that mixed the A and B stories was generally effective.
Improvements: Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of the B-story with the stabbing at the river. It felt like a different video, especially in camera and lighting. I would have liked something that matched the moodiness of your A performance, especially visually.
Positives: yes! a video that made me need to watch all the way through to find out what the heck was going on! loved the blood and the mystery around it. loved the effects and lighting too. A visually interesting piece.
Improvements: murder scene was kinda weird. I like what you were going for but the execution was sloppy. And the pacing could have been tighter. I like the mix of visuals but hanging on shots too long kills my interest unless there's something up there worth really studying. All in all though, one of the best videos of the year.
