  • 4/20 9:47 pm - Keepers: Really well done, long-form story about the arts. As a fine arts department member myself, I'm often floored by how visual artists operate. They always seem to produce art and they do in multiple areas in and around our school. It's great that SEHS is developing an accepting environment for artists at work. The interview work you did was very well done. The interview shots were framed to capture the mural in progress. I thought you did well with the interview sound in spite of the echo in the hallway. The nat sound created some realistic, environmental sounds. Broll shots of Erinn at work were well done. The narration was well written and delivered. IMPROVEMENTS: This was produced more like a long-form news report than a documentary. It felt like a piece from 60 minutes. It was a bit jarring when the narrator/producer suddenly shows up on camera about two thirds of the way through and then we never seem them again. Make sure the style of your documentary is consistent. Again for a news report, this is excellent. But as a documentary, this falls a bit short. We need to see more of Erinn's full journey. See the sketching, interview her at different times throughout the process of ideation, approval and execution. The principal interview was good, but why not hear from one of the arts teachers or fine arts teachers? What do they think of Erinn and this project? What you have is good, but for a documentary, it should be more varied and leveled in terms of the storytelling. I should see multiple locations and broll of Erinn sketching, in class, at home, buying paint, setting up,etc. I wanted more of the conflicts, the doubts the struggles and the triumphs. That's what documentaries have. This is a well done news piece, but I'm not sure it works well as a documentary. Overall, well done, keep working and keep producing!
