  • 2/25 1:48 pm - STORY: I watched this trailer 3 times and still could not infer any meaning about the characters, the plot, or the overall point of this movie. CAMERA: A lot of eye level shots, plenty of wide and full shots, but I didn’t see a lot of variety in angles or an understanding of the Rule of Thirds. The still montage in the middle of this trailer did nothing to establish the relationship between the characters. It was repetitive. EDITING: Major oversight; you had a glitch/flash frame at around :22 or :23. That kind of mistake should not happen in an entry for any competition. LIGHTING: Lighting was insufficient. Even when a scene is intended to be set at night or look dark, you need enough light to create an image. This looks like you just used whatever lighting was available at your interior locations. You could have used lighting much more effectively as well to help convey the mood of this piece. AUDIO: Your mix is off. Primary dialogue should come in between -6 and -12 db on the VU meter, and music beds should be between -18 and -24 on the VU meter. Your music bed was overpowering your dialogue and voice over.

Positives: "The Waiting Room" utilizes crisp, well-composed camera framing, as well as natural light to showcase attention to detail.

Improvements: Though the premise of "The Waiting Room" is clear, this trailer could benefit from additional moments of drama or intrigue to entice the audience and sell the concept. The final line of audio is also difficult to understand – is the dialogue "Are you ready Bob"?

Positives: We can all relate to losing a friend. Sometimes they end in regret, and other times those friendship fade away without explanation. The latter is the hardest part. I can feel our characters pain. I'm loving the art direction, backgrounds, and the choice to transition the couch scene to communicate time passing. Really clear and effective!

Improvements: While I'm intrigued to know what happened to end their friendship, I wish I knew a little more. Did he prioritize his girlfriend? Did their personalities drift apart? Did he do something and not realize? Even without the details, knowing a little more would have given some context to keep me gripped. What is the meaning of the title? It makes me think of a doctors office. It also looks like a single frame editing glitch happens halfway through. This is an unfortunate oversight.

Positives: Nice opening shot. Love the music choice - really sets the tone of the film.

Improvements: The opening scene where they talk about their friendship, should of shown a school or picture. Also, the shots where people are talking in them are a little confusing. Maybe drop the background audio and let the spoken audio take over.
