  • 4/4 9:51 pm - KEEPERS: Wonderful job with this! I have to commend you all for not using the Voice footage as a crutch. I thought it really integrated well into your overall documentary. It didn't feel heavy handed or forced. Really great job editing with sound. The music and the different songs used and performed were really cut seamlessly underneath the interviews and broll. Tremendous work there. The interview shots were all well framed and composed, especially the stuff at the synagogue. IMPROVEMENTS: Molly's voice is really soft in the mix during her interviews. Not sure if she was mic'd properly or not but the nat sound of the music is competing with her too much. Her interview's production value isn't as good as the others which makes me wonder if you interviewed her in haste because it would be the only time you could get her. Either way, it sticks out a bit in the piece. From a story perspective, the transition from his general life as a singer to his profession of singing in a synagogue is a bit abrupt. I'm wondering if that could have been smoothed out better when producing the interviews. How do you go from the bright lights of a network television talent show to singing at a synagogue? That type of question might provide you with a better transitional statement. In terms of editing, you have a few slight clips that occur in some of the soundbytes. Broll is covering the interviews when they happen so it's probably a situation where you cut up the interview. Just make sure you make those cuts as smooth as possible to avoid those audible clips. Overall, this was a very enjoyable, sonically awesome documentary. Well done.

Positives: Nice transition from "The Voice" footage to Todd walking in a club at night. Nice use of natural sound and having more than one voice talking about all of the different facets of Todd.

Improvements: Check your audio in the nightclub and on the interview of Todd's back-up singer - it sounds very hollow. Be sure everybody has a microphone for interviews and see if there is a board you could have plugged into for the audio from the night club. Your transition from "The Voice" to the synagogue around the 2:20 mark is very abrupt - a good way to smooth that out would have been to allow the audio from "The Voice" to fade underneath the outdoor scenic of the synagogue.

Positives: A contemporary universally relating experience of a local musician - lovely.

Improvements: At times, the music audio is a bit "crunchy" and the recording in the back room would have benefited from being mic'ed. Editing at times is a bit too loose.
