  • 4/17 8:59 pm - KEEPERS: This is a cool story to explore for a documentary and the Braveheart Organization and NeuroBalance Center seems like a great partnership to help people with specific needs. IMPROVEMENTS: This really doesn't seem to be a documentary. It instead plays like a long-form news report. This story simply reports on what is happening that day with some key details and background information on Connor. The on-site reporter, lack of music and nat sound all make it have more of a news report feel. This subject is worthy of a documentary, but it needs a sit-down interview with Conner to get his whole story as well as an interview with his father, individuals at Bravehearts and at NeuroBalance. Music is needed. Broll with nat audio is needed, particularly at the climactic moment when Conner and his father meet in public. All of these elements would make for a richer story that is more true to the documentary art form.

Positives: The documentary delivery works very well and shows the literal 'journey' of the horse, 'Gunner,' and the rider, 'Connor,' to meet Connor's father. I think the documentary illustrates the the goal of the neurobalance center in a gentle and non-aggressive manner. I think the information was delivered well and the graphic still images were nicely juxtaposed. Overall, very nicely executed. I think this student deserves the opportunity to do more of these small, segmented pieces.

Improvements: A very minor thing, but the interviewer's voice was a bit muffled and wasn't as clear as I would have liked. The closing statements were a bit rushed; I think a more relaxed outro would have been much better.

Positives: Clear and informative introduction. A compelling topic that is not well known.

Improvements: Main interview shot would have benefited from a slightly different perspective that might keep the horse in the shot. The editing could be tighter.
