Remember the purpose of the category - the natural audio needs to help tell the story along with the sound bytes. Put a wireless lav on someone in this establishment and follow them around to hear the interactions between the workers and the patrons - that's the natural audio you should be using to help tell the story. How does the owner interact with the patrons? How does the waiter interact with the patrons? That's the natural audio you need to be looking for. Otherwise, it's just a news package. The focus of the story was great, but it didn't fit this category. The ending felt very sudden. News packages need to have a conclusion to them - this felt like it was cut off.
  • 3/14 9:43 pm - Although this was disqualified because you had a music bed under your story a few comments I have for you. Your B-Roll was very one dimensional. I felt like I was always seeing the same panning shot from the back of the restaurant looking at the same angle. I appreciated when you cut to a few close ups to give me detail about what was on the walls, but it seemed like you just kept going back to that wide panning shot when you were done. Change the angle, show me the fourth wall but give your audience a fresh perspective. The other thing that didn’t fit was the interview at the end with the man who talked about how much he loves the restaurant, how he has been going there for 50 years, and how it is like home for him – was doing the interview from his own home, and not the restaurant. It just gave a real disjointed feel to the story and what he was adding to it. I love these kinds of stories where there is more to it than just come and get great food, you had a whole history element that gave this story some legs and fresh perspective.
