  • 4/10 9:24 pm - KEEPERS: Thanks for creating an in-depth look into a SWAT team member's journey. Good use of photos to reinforce what the subject is saying visually. Music worked fine. The footage of the training exercises was compelling. IMPROVEMENTS: A few things with your production value. In terms of your interviews, shoot them closer. The typical documentary interview shot, if you're using only one camera, is to film it at a medium close up shot (mid chest to the top of the head). Also the subject should not be looking directly into the camera, but instead be keeping the eye of the interviewer who is sitting just off to one side of the lens. From an audio stand point, try to see if you can invest in a cheap, lav microphone to capture sound better. The echo of the room from the on-board camera audio was distracting. In terms of editing, try to incorporate some slow zooms into your photos so they animate on screen. This makes each photo more engaging for the audience and makes still images come to life more. In terms of your footage, it would have been nice to have seen some broll footage of the subject getting ready for work in the morning, walking into his building, getting into his SWAT car, if possible, etc. At the very least, I would have used more of the training footage and boosted the volume on it so we could get some natural audio sounds of the training. This would have been more engaging in the documentary.
