  • 4/20 10:56 am - This was a tough game for me to critique since one minute and fifty seconds of it wasn’t game play (timeout). During the timeout, the PbP and commentary did a decent job of talking about the game, but went silent for 20 seconds. With the PbP for the game, they never used NT names. Basketball is easier to call then football, since there are only five on the court. Make names on both sides a priority. Also, both seemed content to commentate a little longer, even during the home possession (2:30 to 2:50 in the possession). I do like their energy when they do get into the game. It looks like we have at least camera angles, so that’s good. I like the cuts during the deadballs, but we didn’t utilize camera angles once game play was started. No instant replay is challenging. Try to show us plays like the ball tipped off the finger tips.

Positives: Good clean shots into the huddles. Nicely-framed. Good stuff. Great energy on play-by-play on the last make.

Improvements: I think the announcers know the players, but I think they sound a little bit nervous. There are some "uh"s and some times they misspeak. It's a tough thing to talk for hours on end. I'd encourage you to be sure of what you want to say before you say it rather than getting caught mid-sentence. There was a 20-30 second span where nobody talked. Could have used that time to reset the audience as to how we got to this point in the game.

Positives: - Good job with some creative camera angles during the timeout, and liked the pace with which the director cut around to avoid staying on any one shot too long. - Announcers provided good insight and enthusiasm, clearly know the team and the sport.

Improvements: - You might consider taking a break during a called timeout like that - have your announcers pitch to a break ("we'll be right back") and then just sit on a wide shot for :30-:45. That gives your entire crew a chance to catch its breath for a second, but even better it can give the director a chance to put together a cohesive plan to come back with - maybe pick a star player to focus on and let the announcers know so they can talk about her, plus have one of your cameras get an ISO shot of her to match. Can make the broadcast look really cohesive!

Positives: Good use of the "hero" camera after the baskets. Good recap by the announcer right when the time out is called. Nice tight shots of the huddles during the timeouts. Nice job by the wide camera operator following the action.

Improvements: During the timeout, there was some "dead air" - what else could the announcers share during this time? For future, if you're able, a sideline reporter would be a great addition to your broadcast - could go to them during a timeout.
