  • 4/11 8:43 pm - Keepers: I loved the diversity expressed within this story. I felt like I got really thorough sense of this school's community and its overall positivity. As an aside, had you considered this for school promotion? I would have done well there and added some much needed diversity to all of the football/sports hype videos. Audio quality was very strong and consistent which is a real strength considering the number of interviews you had to deal with. The broll and overall shot compositions are quite strong. Improvements: In terms of broll, don't overly rely on drone shots. A couple are fine, but let's see some locked down wide shots instead of some of these buildings. In my opinion, drone shots should be used sparingly to accentuate otherwise good exterior broll, rather than being the primary source of the exterior broll. The interview shots had a lot of murals in the background which is interesting enough, but try varying this up and placing your subjects in areas with plenty of depth behind them. This always leads to more interesting shots and avoids flat looking subjects. I'm not saying don't use the murals. Again, use those sparingly. Shoot down hallways and use leading lines to your advantage. In terms of editing, watch your audio. A few ends of words were cut off at the ends, syllables and half syllables. J or L cut those so we hear all of them. Also, leave some of those broll shots on screen a bit longer. Multiple times, the shots were on and off screen too quickly and it didn't really give me a chance to engage with them. In editing land, we call this pacing. Also, this piece went on too long. The music was the same so emotionally, it all kind of felt like one note. I think this would have been much better at 3:30 than at 5 minutes. Overall, there is a lot to like in here. Keep working and keep telling stories!
