  • 4/27 10:51 pm - Nice tease at show opening. Intro music seems to just cut off, fade out might smooth out the transition. Gymnastics interview audio seems to jump to one channel. 2nd interview sounds correct. Some audio of interview sounds that it was done without a mic. Good anchor lead ins to stories. Broll is shot well, good interviews. Interesting stories that pertain to your audience. Audio kind of jumps in at times. Show sort of just ends without a conclusion and I'm guessing that's due to time limitations. Might consider scoping the show early, eliminating other sections and instead including your show ending to present a more complete representation of the show.
  • 3/3 11:26 am - Nice opening sequence to the show. Anchors do a nice job! Good, clear voices that also include a little "flair" that makes you sound interesting. A few stumbles that perhaps more practice with the script would help. Nameplates don't stay on long enough to read everything in the gymnastics story. Good b-roll and interviews in the gymnastics story. Good facts. Audio in the freshmen story is inconsistent- interviews sound like they didn't use a mic, and then are not at the same level as other audio. Boat story- very interesting. Audio again is an issue, as some audio is clear and others less. The weightlifting story is well done. Watch the opinion in the anchors- this is NEWS, not opinion as there was a lot of opinion in the script. The show just ends at the end of the weightlifting story. That's awkward. Needs to have a clear and decisive ending to the show. Seems incomplete without it. Overall, the packages are informative and well done. I think your audience would appreciate the stories.

Positives: -I like the comments and banter from the anchors to bring some humanity to the newscast and a more conversational tone -Nice variety of reporter stories and soundbites to break up anchor reads

Improvements: -A little more energy from the anchors and reporters could be improved. Your energy is contagious and will transfer to the viewer. -Keep an eye on pacing. Reading/talking too fast can overwhelm the viewer and impact comprehension

Judge 2

Positives: Great in-depth reporting in these news packages, and the “Spartans at Sea” pieces was a unique find. Aside from the intro to gymnastics package, your presentation was professional and creditable.

Improvements: The puns in the anchor copy introducing the gymnastic package were inappropriate for a topic so important to those student-athletes. A bit dry. The reporters’ delivery could have been more conversational, and add some creative elements such as some segues with music and graphics and more variety in your reporting style such as more news delivered from the anchor desk and sports or entertainment reports.

Positives: - This is an excellent entry overall, and it's because the news packages are really well done. Your reporters picked soundbites that push the story forward. They included great pieces of natural sound that add to the story and help them flow. Bravo! - I love how your reporters thought about how to set up their interviews. The shots look great.

Improvements: - Nit-picking here... on some of the packages, the only thing that could have made them better is more shot variety. For instance, on the power lifting story, get some close-up shots of people's faces, the numbers on the weights, people cheering them on, etc. This just helps the story flow and keeps you out of editing holes/jump cuts. - And on those sports stories, consider keeping a microphone on a coach/athlete and getting some b-roll of them with it on. This will give you more natural sound opportunites.
