HF Girls Volleyball going up against TF North
Positives: Good job highlighting the hero of each play by cutting to them and giving them a graphic spotlight. Talent did a good job not speaking over each other.
Improvements: At the start of the clip, #8 got her spotlight but after the graphic we almost missed the action and didn't get a clear look of the ball going out, so be careful when going to a graphic and make sure you have enough time so you don't miss any action in play. The far right camera location that's shooting the servers for Homewood shouldn't be placed on the opposite side of the court because you are breaking a 180 degree rule -- the player's facing serving the ball goes from left to right then cut to main-wide camera and ball is traveling from right to left. Camera position should be on the near side of the court same side the other cameras are on. There were a couple times where the court-side camera's didn't get a clear shot of the ball hitting the floor, perhaps keeping them a little zoomed out and not so tight will prevent that from happening.
Positives: - I absolutely LOVED the full screen stats. I don't think I've seen that before at this level and it is a huge addition to the broadcast and benefit for your viewers. - Really good camera work throughout. Volleyball moves quickly, and having cameras who are getting good replay angles and good cutaways between points are extremely valuable to a director.
Improvements: - While I loved the stat pages, I would encourage you to be careful on when and how you use them. In this clip the first time a full screen is brought in we end up missing the serve and some game action. Remember that nothing is ever more important than the game itself - that's the whole reason we're doing this! So adding things to the broadcast are great, but not if they're going to cause us to miss the game. Much better use and timing on the second full screen. - This is minor and I'm not accounting for this in my scoring at all, but if possible I'd encourage you to move the scorebug to the bottom portion of the screen for volleyball. In this sport it gets in the way of the ball at the top of the screen. Now, that said, if you do put it on the bottom then your game camera needs to accommodate for it so we still see the out lines... but overall it's a bit easier placement for viewers on the bottom.
Positives: This was incredibly professional. The directing was awesome. There was such a great mix of wide shot game action mixed in with player/emotional close ups. Most high school broadcasts are just boring wide shot the whole time. The production value and audience experience here is very high level. Be proud of this. Graphics, instant replay... wow. Was this filmed and then edited later? If this was a live feed WITH GRAPHICS and INSTANT REPLAY... I'm speechless. This is TV-ready, pro sport level production value.
Improvements: It was really hard for me to find something I didn't like. Sometimes the mistakes are obvious. This time I had to watch many times to find things that I think need improving. Sound - I'll take a point off for sound because the mic was peaking and popping a few times when the announcer got louder, and on the "p" words. The pros use $100,000 microphones... not something we all have access to. Anyway, I suggest playing with the gain levels on the mic to make sure it doesn't peak when the announcer gets loud. And/or have the announcer stay at the same volume. In order to do this, the announcer can only change TONE when he / she is excited (not raising his / her volume). I'm supposed to give two examples of elements that can be improved, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned this. I'm really reaching on this one: The announcers would use the same words multiple times in a row. Example: Using the word "kill" three times in the span of 10 seconds. I wouldn't call that a mistake, but the expert announcers have an poetic way of varying their word usage... So instead of this... Announcer 1: Great kill by Sarah! Announcer 2: That's her 4th kill today Announcer 1: They really needed that kill Try this... Announcer 1: Great kill by Sarah! Announcer 2: That's her 4th untouched spike today Announcer 1: They really needed that effort It's hard to come up with synonyms for certain terms. But I just want to get the announcers to think about that and experiment. Listen closely to pro sports announcers... Announcer 1: DeRozan for 3.... YES Announcer 2: Great look behind the arch Announcer 1: He is shooting 66% tonight from downtown
