- 4/27 8:38 pm - The wide shot has a lot of extra headroom. Makes the performance seem far away. Cool drum close-up at 1:24. at 1:42 the drumming is the important part but it's cut off. The audio is great. You can hear and feel the audience. The performer snuck out of frame on you at 2:44. This looks like it would have been fun to record!
- 4/27 8:14 am - Critique primarily for director:
0:03 - Frame tighter; extra space for cyc. & floor doesn’t add to the story telling.
Great audio.
0:14 - Don’t take a shot until it’s set.
0:29 - Leave this shot as soon as front blocks rear.
0:34 - Lots of empty on left half of frame; I’m guessing this is a lock-down shot
with no camera op.
1:02 - Make choice to clearly include right drummer or not.
1:54 - Bail on shot before his head gets cuts cut-off.
2:02 - Lots of empty on left of frame.
2:06 - Finally tight on drum head.
2:28 - Great composition; too bad he moved out of key light.
2:40 - Bail on shot before he’s mostly out of frame.
I ranked this in my Top 6.
- 4/13 8:34 pm - Thank you for your entry and sharing your creation with us. I very much enjoyed viewing your submission. Just a few observations. At times the shot framing could use improvement. Perhaps take another camera shot away from the stationary camera? Good audio. I recognize we only have a few minute clip, but a graphic / lower third could help add performance detail. Again, enjoyed viewing your submission and thank you again for entering!
Judge 1
Positives: -Great establishing wide shot at the beginning
-Nice job following the action with a variety of shots that are fluid
Improvements: -Try to avoid quick zooms
-The audience seemed very engaged, sometimes it can benefit these performances to throw in a reaction shot from the audience if you can
Judge 2
Positives: Nice job following who has the lead on the drums and focusing on them. Cameras looked balanced well and matched switching between them.
Improvements: The pace of transitions were a little slow and could have a few more cuts to keep up the energy of the music, performers and audience. A few more close up shots incorporated would help with the pacing of transitions.
Judge 3
Positives: - Sound was well mixed and I really liked that we could clearly hear the audience's reaction throughout.
- Good job with framing to show us both the person and the instrument - very important in a performance like this!
Improvements: - Cameras and director can better focus on the drummer at the front of the stage, who is the key performer. Seems like you may have been a little caught off-guard at first when they moved.
- Would like to see some shots where the cameras are panning/tilting while live. Starting on the drum and panning up to the person's face. Or utilize some dynamic focus to slowly go out of focus while you dissolve into your next shot. Things like that will help keep it visually interesting for several minutes when there are only three performers.
