4/19 9:45 am - It was hard to know what the objective of the video was? I think part of it was an awkward start.
At the beginning there was a bad jump cut between the 1st and 2nd shots. Were they playing together or warming up? because I would have started with something more impressive that would make me think wow, they are amazing. They probably are, I just didn’t feel that.
Music in broll just chopped out at 10 seconds, blend it in under the interview and slowly drift it off so it is not so abrupt (and choppy)..
Seems a little insulting when you begin talking about taking it out of the case. These are students who have worked hard at their craft, It is like hearing a state-bound football team talking about how they tie their shoes and fasten their shoulder pads – give your audience more.
Your broll lacks diversity, give me some close ups of each player like you did it at 1:16 and 1:48 otherwise many of your shots just looked the same. Put some creativity into it, place your cameras in point of views that the average audience would not normally see. Also when you change shots the music is so choppy. Try and blend it better it can be done with some creatively placed close up of music, faces, feet tapping etc.)
Very nice transition at 1:57, I wish they all could have been like that.
I really didn’t get a sense of how the four musicians came together, I felt like I just kind of watched them play and talk to each other. So to be honest I was not really sure what the story was.
4/16 1:30 pm - Without the description for the entry, I would not know what this story is about. With any type of news package, the focus of the story needs to be clear without any kind of a anchor intro or a written description. The student interviewed talks about preparing his violin to play, but there is nothing stated in this news package about preparing for a competition. I would have included at least one other interview with a member of this quad that talks about the competition that this group is entering to help the viewer understanding what it is they are preparing for. There was a flash frame at 1:31. Make sure that the natural audio is at the same level on your VU meter for your sound bytes.
3/6 2:20 pm - Selecting a quartet to cover for a natural audio news package is a great choice! I loved hearing the music your group performed and also the students collaborating together. Some of the audio cuts seemed a bit abrupt. For your story, I wanted to hear more about the competition you were preparing for-what was it for? Why are you practicing together? This seemed more like a how to video for setting up a violin cut next to footage of your group practicing. In a future cut, it would be great if you could ask members of your group what they are playing and why to form a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Great start overall!
