  • 4/19 9:57 am - As a natural sound package I felt like you had great opportunities to incorporate some cool sounds / close ups of feet, but you never did that. All I ever really heard was the music for the dancing, which at times I felt like it was more like a soundtrack than pulling in authentic sound. As a natural sound package, there just is not that much as I would have hoped for (or the topic lends itself to) here. The camera work looked all the same, always wide shots of dancing (or stills) but no diversity, no close ups, no creative shots etc. I didn’t feel like the visuals always supported what was being talked about but rather was just filler so you didn’t get stuck on the head shot. Be more intentional with your footage to help tell the story. Sydney talked the whole time, you never gave your audience a chance to digest what she was saying, you just cut up a long interview and tried to make it flow. As a result I really don’t hear anything because there is no margin (space to process) in your story, no time to stop and take a breath and think about the material I just received.
  • 4/16 1:35 pm - Remember that music beds are not permitted in this category. The purpose of this category is to use the natural audio from the b-roll to help tell the story. There were some clips that had music in it because it was part of the natural audio, but there were many parts of this package in which music was added because it wasn’t there to begin with (all the spots where still images were used). Lose the music and let the interview tell the story with the natural audio clips weaved in. Put a wireless mic on a dancer and record her while she or he is actually dancing and use that natural audio in your story to help tell the story. Especially while he/she is practicing - what great insight into the rehearsals and working on their craft. But there should NOT be one common song being played throughout the entire story.
  • 3/6 2:29 pm - I loved the variety of b-roll you incorporated into this story- the original photos, performances, and practices gave us a lot to look at! I loved hearing the clicking of the shoes, but I wish there was more of a variety of audio for this story. For example, I would have loved to have heard the dance coach providing feedback to the dancers or announcers at competition or applause. For your interview shot, I would suggest not filming into the window. This makes your subject appear under exposed. I would also suggest zooming in to eliminate a little bit of headroom.
