CPTV News QuickCUT is the social media news program produced by Crown Point High School’s media program, “Crown Town Media.” This episode aired on our Snapchat account on January 20, 2023. The news program features local and national news packages alongside sports highlights and weather. Featuring anchors Chris Gloff and Madeline Degenhart and packages/editing by the staff of CPTV News.
Positives: -Great pacing and diction from the anchors -Awesome graphics and video that flowed well and kept it interesting
Improvements: -Try to utilize more transitions -- "moving on to local news" or "here's what's making headlines across the country " so it doesn't feel like an overload of information smashed together -"With celebrities boycotting the event last year and the show's absence, it's easy to understand the low ratings." Never editorialize or assume correlation unless it's proven. It's your job as an anchor to say the facts and let the viewer do the rest.
Positives: Displaying two videos at once, one on top of the other, is an excellent use of social media’s unique aspect ratio. Professional graphics provided high energy appropriate for social media.
Improvements: This newscast could have benefited from in-depth news packages, and instead relied too heavily on anchors reading headlines. News packages are more engaging since they give a reporter the opportunity to tell a story. While embracing new technology is appreciated, do not forget the elements that viewers connect with. Make sure your hand gestures do not distract from your message.
Positives: - You did a really great job of squeezing a lot of information -- and enough for each story -- into this newscast. I found it very informative. The headline teases at the beginning were also a great touch. Well done! - Great job mixing in relevant sound bites on a lot of your stories. It goes a long way in breaking up the anchors and helps your newscast flow.
Improvements: - I understand visuals can be a challenge, and I think some of the generic stock photos proved that. When you don't give the viewer a lot of time to read or comprehend a graph, it's tough for them to understand. Try to look for a better way to visualize that. - Minor tweak would be writing. Just try to hone in on active voice vs. passive voice however you can.
