The #4 ranked Hilltoppers from Glenbard West come and visit the #6 ranked York Dukes on the last Friday in September.
Positives: Talent did a good job of not stepping on one another and letting each other finish their sentence before the other begins. Good job showing player #7 as the "hero" celebrating and returning back to the bench and getting reactions of the crowd.
Improvements: During the huddle, some of the shots were on a little too long creating a lag. You can tighten this up by shooting color shots of audience, band, cheerleaders, coach/bench, etc. Play-by-play announcer sounded a bit softer than color and crowd mics were almost overpowering the announcers.
Positives: - Between the announcers and the shots of the student section I could definitely feel the energy in the stadium. Good job conveying that to your viewers.
Improvements: - Camera coverage can be a little sharper. On the interception play the game camera got faked out and lost the ball. There were several times when we saw cameras either zooming in or drifting around looking for a shot (although to be fair, that could also be on the director. Make sure you're communicating which camera is live!) - The nat sound - especially when the stadium PA announcer was talking - was a bit overwhelming and made it difficult to hear that announcers at times.
Positives: I like the sound mixing of crowd and announcers. That can be tricky but you pulled this off very well. It's important to hear both without one overpowering the other. Directing - Great mix of wide shots and closer shots on individual players. Obviously we need to see the game action most of the time, but it's always great to capture the emotion of a single player and mix in those moments. That makes a good broadcast into a great broadcast. Announcers - These announcers understand the STORY TELLING of a sporting event. It's never just a robot giving information (bad!). These announcers are setting up story lines, giving emotional descriptions of the game, and have a great FEEL for what is happening (and are conveying it to the audience to make the audience FEEL the sporting event).
Improvements: Camera - It looks like part of the scoreboard bug on screen is a live feed of a camera pointed at the in stadium scoreboard. I've never seen that before but it works. (Assuming that is what it is...) The only problem is the camera moves a few times. Maybe it was shaking when the fans were cheering and stomping. Maybe you need a more sturdy tripod setup to place on the scoreboard clock. Sound - The mic peaked a few times when the announcer got excited. This is very common in high school sports broadcasting. My suggestion is to experiment with gain levels on the mic that will allow louder announcing, OR the announcer needs to keep the same volume... even when excited. You have to use an excited TONE on big plays. If you raise your voice volume, then a lot of mics won't be able to handle it.
