Entry Description

Joliet Catholic Academy's 02/03/2022 Weekly WJCA Newscast by our Broadcasting Team. Our broadcast begins with our anchors Lillian and Layla introducing a new entertainment segment to pull our audience into our broadcast. We follow up with an interview of our Alumni Director about our Hall of Champions; an interview about our upcoming blood drive; our cheer captains talk about their road to state; and we get to see two art students talk about art pieces that were displayed at a recent college art exhibit. We finish with information about our blood drive and state cheer competition and then roll our credits.

  • 4/28 12:39 am - Nice intro. Try to capture clean audio from your anchors. You may be using a boom mic but there is still a lot of slap echo and also a jump cut in the middle of anchor intro. Try recording the trivia with a couple different shot angles rather than one 3 shot. Tighten your edits...especially going to Hall of Champions package. Also, try not to record a package in the exact same spot as where we just saw the anchors. Tighten up the 2 shot of your anchors. It will connect them more to your audience. Work on more package production. Take your audience out of your studio/set and out into the places where these events are happening.
  • 4/27 11:53 pm - Opening on anchors is creative. It sounds like neither anchor has a mic and there is a massive jump cut. The lead story is a trivia contest, which is not news. Feels like a fun segment, but not compelling or appropriate for a news show. The anchors throw it to a segment of an interview filmed in the exact spot the anchors were just sitting. Again, audio issue here, tough to hear. This interview is very long. Next segment is also in the same area and has many strange jump cuts.
  • 3/5 10:34 am - Anchors have some enthusiasm! First shot of anchors goes straight to a jump cut- got to avoid that. Use graphics or something to cover that up, or simply have the girls memorize the whole beginning. First segment about trivia- a bit amateurish, as it features 3 guys sitting there with no direction to what's happening. Very hard to follow or know what's going on. Camera shot is allowing tons of headroom. Interview with Bebar- awkward as the boys sits there the whole time. Probably need to cut to another close-up shot of the girl speaking. Black flash before the second question? Blood drive again had lots of jump cuts in it. Better planning or use of graphics and b-roll can avoid those jumps in editing. It will make it look much more professional. Cheer segment- much of the same. When interviewing that many people, try to use multiple cameras so that the camera shot can change (and jump cuts will be avoided). You use the same set for pretty much every segment. You have a nice set, but make sure you move around and try different backgrounds so your set does not become repetitive. Overall, you have some interesting ideas for your show, but the technical aspects need lots of work. Better planning, more editing and more concentration on the "look" of the videos will help your show improve.
