CPTV News field reporter Chris Gloff examines the rising number of fake violent school threats across America after nearby Valparaiso High School experienced three false threats in the span of three weeks in January 2023.
Positives: - Great story, overall! You did an excellent job explaining a topic that's tough to visualize. I really liked the editing to show the statistics toward the beginning of the story. - I really liked how you incorporated interviews. They were well-framed and represented different viewpoints well.
Improvements: - You had a flash frame (dip to black) before the statistics portion of your story. Try to check for those before exporting next time. - The story still needs some more natural sound in it -- if that's the security guy talking with a staff member, or noise at school, try to include that. It helps the viewer understand.
Positives: I like how you used other news sources to help tell your story, especially when you wouldn't have had video/pics of your own to show. Good job getting a variety of interviews with students, staff and experts. It helped advance the story from all angles.
Improvements: You stand up looks a little blurry. You can do a tight shot on an interview when there is nothing important or visual to show in the background. During the interview with Dave, I kept wondering why you were focusing on the family photo behind him. Did you use the wrong audio channel for the interview with the guidance counselor? It sounds like the camera mic.
Positives: Great use of statistics to accurately tell the story Strong reporter delivery. The piece was written well and I liked that the video matched the writing
Improvements: I would've liked to hear from the students earlier on in the piece... It's important to capture that emotion of how they feel about the threats. I'm a true believer that personalizing a story at the beginning is always best. Would've liked to hear natural sound... whether it's students walking in the hallway or even sound from the director of safety and security as he chatted with his coworker. If you use a quick part of that conversation, you can use that to introduce him, instead of just video alone.
