In this edition of Backtalk, famous news personality Micah Materre is interviewed by Liam Hickey, a sophomore at Riverside-Brookfield High School. This is a 5 minute excerpt taken from the full 40 minute interview.
Positives: Liam was very engaged with Micah and able to deftly transition from question to question. Shots were composed well and the variety of shots from wide to close up kept the piece visually interesting.
Improvements: Would've loved to hear more questions about Micah's decades long experience in the industry and the things that she's seen.
Positives: Liam did a great job with this interview. I would practice working on transitions between questions and/or topics - you want it to sound smooth. Great job by the director - good pacing.
Improvements: What else could you have added for b-roll? Any video from your guest that you could have used?
Positives: This was a lovely interview! Micah is a wonderful journalist and I am so glad Liam was able to talk to her. The questions flowed well together and I am glad you didn't just "stick to the script." It was great that you said "that's so inspiring" and "we can all learn from this." It is much more natural to add little remarks to make it flow like a real conversation, because that's what a talk show is all about -- the conversation. The lighting, sound and the backdrop are all great. This was a professional production.
Improvements: I would have liked to see some b-roll while Micah was talking. I know there was a bit of b-roll at the end of the clip showing her in the studio. It would be nice to throw in a photo of her family (with permission of course) or a picture of her hiking, or even just more clips of her at WGN. Anything you can cut away to "show rather than tell" is great. Plus it gives the audience more to look at than just an interview shot of the interviewee and a 2-shot of the interviewer.
