  • 4/27 11:19 pm - The open was very well edited and creative. It was a good combo of school and personality. The host is very compelling and presents the material and a natural way. She does a nice job of teasing the upcoming stories to make me want to stay tuned. The pitch to the first story seemed abrupt, and could have included a little more info by the on camera anchor. In the first package, there was a lot of creative video. I wasn't sure if the effects in that video were from stock footage or produced by the student. When you toss to a soundbite try to lead into it with some piece of info not simply stating the name and title of who will be interviewed. Anchor intro to second story was better. I like the bulk of this story and I thought it is done well. With the black history month, this felt like a cool way to communicate a message. Creative film making. I did find the anything but a backpack piece funny, but was a little strange in a newscast. Mic up is a nice way to show us behind the scenes. This show was overall very effective and had a nice pace. I appreciated the variety of tones it hit. Well done.
  • 4/27 1:36 pm - Opening is really well done. Modern and professional looking. I like the segment LT descriptors. They communicate right at the start what they segment is going to be about. Some broll appeared sped up in first package. A couple jump cuts in anchor Cool BHM piece. Audio immediately following seemed at a higher gain. In the gymnastics segment, audio is distorted in parts. I like the outro connecting your audience to other outlets or past work. Good show with some nice elements and story work. I would suggest working your anchors into the newscast in a way that isn't just a one or two sentence intro to each package.
  • 2/28 12:24 pm - Cool opening! Very creative and showing a lot of your school! Social Media package- keep "we" out of the story so that YOU the reporter are not part of the story. Long pause of black at the 2:35 mark was a bit awkward. Steppers package- nameplates should include coaches full name- not a shortened nickname. Saw jump cuts at the 4:18 mark- should not see editing jump cuts like that in a reporter. There was no intro to the Anything but a backpack day- kind of an awkward placement of the segment right after the black history segment. Watch audio levels so that they are consistent throughout the whole show- the gymnastics segment had HOT audio way above the other segments. Show ends abruptly as the music cuts off. Overall- it's a good show with interesting and timely segments. Don't forget the element of actual anchor news that can be mixed in with segments as well. Technically- make sure audio is consistent and your editing avoids the jump cut in your anchor. Nice work.

Positives: -the host has great energy and presence. Great job with pacing, inflection and keeping the energy from start to finish -awesome job incorporating a variety of reporter packages to the newscasts with reporter standups in the beginning. It shows the talent and producers put a lot of effort into the newscast. It was interesting from start to finish

Improvements: -I would take out the music underneath your news packages. Sometimes music evokes emotion and makes the viewers feel a certain way. To be as objective as possible, I would leave out the music, unless it’s a feature story. -(Gymnast story) keep an eye on over modulated Audio, if the mic levels are too high it can impact the quality of your story

Positives: The program includes some very creative elements, particularly the attention-grabbing shots in the opening, the b-roll showing the screen time on students’ phones, the Black History Month package’s transition to black-and-white to color video and the mic’d up segment. The packages were very relevant to your audience, students.

Improvements: The program lacked cohesion. The second half was a disjointed string of non-traditional news pieces. Mixing these pieces with more traditional news elements may have helped along with some music and graphic segues to create a tight package. While creativity is appreciated, don’t let it hurt your credibility. At the end of the Step package, a student gave a direct promotional pitch for the club. The gymnastic package included a piece of audio of questionable taste.

Positives: - Overall, the storytelling is strong here. I like how the reporters got multiple interviews and viewpoints on their stories. It really makes a difference. - The camera work is mostly strong too -- on all of the original content.

Improvements: - Instead of playing music underneath your stories, I think most of them could have benefitted from the use of natural sound. For instance, on the social media story, our phones make noises when we use these apps. On the dance story, step is all about producing sound! Put some of those sounds in the story to help break up your track. - These stories could have been better with more original b-roll and sequenced editing. It will just help them flow better. Also, there are quite a few jump cuts.
