  • 4/19 9:59 am - Your story just jumps right in with an interview, show me a clip or two that draws me into the story and gives me some context. It also ends abruptly. Is there a “so what” to your piece, should more students come next year when it happens or is it exclusive to people from that culture? It is just talking the whole time, where is the natural audio? The interviews were good, diverse and told a story, you just aren’t using the audio to pull your audience in, and “experience” what the night was about. Sure you gave me B-roll while they were talking but it seemed very generic, the visuals should reinforce what is being talked about. In addition, try placing some broll clips with audio between the speakers so I can digest what I heard as well as allow my focus to be on the experience of the sights and sounds. Your story just jumps into the next interview. Because my focus is always on a speaker your story loses the impact a natural audio piece is supposed to get your audience engaged with. Your camera work just seemed to always be these wide dancing shots which is ok, but you never gave me close ups, details from these outfits etc. So after awhile all of your B-roll just looks all the same. I really didn’t feel like I missed Garba night, because all I really heard was people talk about it, tease me with some interesting sights and sounds, and then I will feel like I “missed out”.
  • 4/16 1:35 pm - Remember that the purpose of this category is to use the natural audio from your b-roll to help tell the story - not just include it in the story. So when the students are talking about their favorite part of the dance, not only show that part of the dance, but bring that natural up full so the viewer can hear exactly what is happening during that part of the dance. When the student talks about learning the dances, bring the natural audio up full to let the viewers hear the instructions going on. Great b-roll. This looks like a great event! Loved the variety of sound bytes from students talking about it.
  • 3/6 2:30 pm - You did an excellent job cutting your interviews to provide context about this event and how much fun the students are having. Having the students hold the lapel mic during interviews may seem a bit too informal for news reporting. Since the students are wearing traditional clothing and may not be able to run the wire through shirts, you might try running the wire behind them and placing your mic pack in the back OR using a boom mic. I also was wanting to hear more variety of sounds at the event- I heard a lot of music and crowds to tell the story. Is there any other audio that you could have recorded to convey the excitement of this event? Great start overall!
