On this episode of Strange Hobbies we feature Hubert (Huebie) Kelly, who shares about his obsession with a certain member of Outkast.
Positives: 1. This is an extremely funny mockumentary piece and the premise is so wildly specific but is done so well and in a funny way. 2. The lighting, fly-on-the-wall camerawork, and interview pieces were all reminiscent of professional mockumentary work. I am genuinely surprised at how well this was filmed.
Improvements: 1. There were some editing hiccups where cuts were made too soon or didn't make sense. For example, when introducing Hubert's mother, we only see her and her lower-third for a short amount of time until it disappears, not giving enough time to fully read it 2. There was a moment of discontinuity during the interview where Hubert is holding the photo against his chest and it cuts to him holding it up. Make sure your cuts are continuous between cameras because it was a jarring transition.
Positives: The story worked really well. This was a really funny concept and I think adding the mockumentary feel was perfect. This is something that has been done multiple times so the skeleton of the project is there and I think you filled it something that was not only funny but engaging. In this genre specifically it can be so easy to not hit the mark in terms of humor or to whip to a reaction of a character. Good job.
Improvements: - a little too much head room on the talking heads. - The interviews and cleaning the photo look to be shot in the same location. The background blue is different when cutting between shots. When shooting make sure the white balance stays consistent. If not then it will take people out of the world.
Positives: Overall, the piece was unique. The use of different interviews with the ex-girlfriend and parent helped support this idea that the main character had an obsession. The composition of shots was well thought out and supported by strong lighting.
Improvements: The hand-held camera work was a nice touch and added to the style of the piece however, it was a bit too shaky at times and could have benefitted from a stabilizer or the use of a smoother gimble. The story started out as entertaining but then started to drag on. Improving the editing might have helped the pace of the story.
