  • 4/10 7:48 am - No clock in the scroebug. This game revolves around timing. The commentator says that there is an 8 second backcourt violation – but it is 10-seconds in high school. The commentator and PxP struggle with understanding who is in charge. The PxP is primary and should have the commentary fill in the gaps. The two talk over each other the whole time and it’s a major distraction. Nice job with multiple cameras. Try not to take camera 2 (the closeup) right before camera 1 (wide shot) unless the two shots are different. Sometimes it feels like a jump cut. No replays weakened the broadcast a bit.

Positives: Good use of multiple camera angles. During the timeout nice job getting the in the huddle shot showing coach talk to the players.

Improvements: The directing is very untraditional to the standard of directing basketball which is fine I would only recommend when the play crosses the half-court line, don't cut to the other balcony camera that is at the same height and focal length, this creates an awkward jump-cut breaking the 20mm 30 degree rule of film/TV. Some of the action was a little too tight causing the handheld and balcony camera to have a few whip-pans. Rather than the score graphic displaying "half 2" it should state what quarter the game is in.

Positives: - Up cameras did great job of following the action and keeping things in frame. - I liked seeing the variety of camera shots available to you, but would encourage the director to avoid cutting to under basket cameras during live action. It's difficult as a viewer to follow along from that angle.

Improvements: - There were several times when the two announcers would talk on top of each other, which makes both of them hard to understand. Work on a better separation of who is calling the play-by-play action and who is the analyst, because at times it seemed like each of you were doing both roles at the same time. - Audio levels bounced around a bit during this one, especially as the announcers got excited some audio became overmodulated.

Positives: Sound is mixed very well. Good mix of crowd noise and announcers. Directing - I really like the close up shots and the camera cuts. There were great shots of the baseline camera on that 3 pointer, very cool and professional and dynamic. I also really like the more zoomed in shot of the white jersey team bench and coach at 2:39. Shots like that are crucial to help portray the emotions and energy of a basketball game. Great job.

Improvements: The wide camera had a few instances of zooming in and then back out and then back in. It's ok if you don't like a shot and need to adjust, but I think it's better to make a decision and stick with it for a while. It can lower the overall professionalism if you keep adjusting three or four times in a row, in a matter of 10 seconds. Announcers - I really liked these guys! They get full points for energy and capturing the emotion of the game. However, it was very clear to me that they were fans of the school (of course). It's ok to root for a team as an announcer, but try to refrain from rooting for the team in your announcing. For example: I would try to stay away from phrases like "Come on! Shoot it!" Or "Hey ref, that's a foul!" Or "Awww man!" - These phrases are what we say as FANS of a team. The announcer has a certain duty of professionalism as a presenter. You can still show emotion while announcing, but try to focus on describing the game to your audience, as opposed to being someone that is experiencing it yourself. Instead of "Come on, shoot it!" try, "Wilson needs to shoot soon." Instead of "Hey ref, that's a foul!" try, "Home fans might be unhappy with a potential missed foul call there." Instead of "Aww man!" try,"Disappointing effort there, the shot was blocked." I would definitely still encourage using emotion as an announcer, PLEASE keep doing that.
